I finally determined that the Pilot Module was broken. On the web I found prices ranging from $80 - $120. This seemed excessive to me so I dug some more and found a refence to a Dirke Engineering (the names are changed to protect the guilty and the inocent) that listed the part for $44. I called to verify that they had the part. I rushed over and talked to a clerk who acknowlegded that we had spoken on the phone. He pointed me to the part and I returned the counter to pay for it.
"What company?" he asked.
"Company? I don't have a company." I said.
"Do you have a CA20 HVAC liscense?" he responded.
"A what?" I returned.
"So you are a just a homeowner, we do not sell to anyone without a CA20 HVAC liscense." he tells me.
"Why not?" I said.
"We used to sell to homeowners, but they screw things up. Anyway the price would hav been higher for a homeowner." he said.
"Higher? Why? I asked.
"It gives liscensed guys a way to make even more money." he answered.
"Ok, so you relly won't sell this to me." I said.
"Nope. But I tell you what. Go try Jameson Supply, they might sell you one." He draws a map and I head out.
At Jameson Supply, I tell the cleark that I need an LH680005 pilot assembly.
"What's that?" he asks.
"It's a three wire pilot for a Carrier furnace." I tell him. He gets me one, it's only $38, but I over hear the other clerk tell someone on the phone "We only sell to liscensed contractors."
"I don't have an HVAC liscense so I guess that means you won't sell it to me. Right?" I said.
"That's right?" he tells me.
"Give me a break." I plead.
"I can't, but I tell you what. Go to Noteaire and they might sell it to you." he tells me and he draws a map. I head over to Noteaire.
"I need a Carrier three wire pilot assembly?" I ask the clerk. The owner looks over and says, "We don't have one." he says.
"I've been to Dirke and to Jameson and the won't sell to me becasue I don't have an HVAC liscense. Any suggestions?" I say.
He tells the clerk to call EBBY and ask if they will sell me one. The clerk calls and they confirm that I can buy one.
"How much?" I ask. He asks into the phone.
"$160." he tells me.
"ONE HUNDRED and SIXTY." I say in total disbelief. "Dirke has is for $44, Jameson has it for $38." I add.
"That's a total rip off." the owner says. He turns to the clerk and says, "call Dirke and tell them that we have a customer pickup." He tells me that it will cost $75 for the part.
"$75. But Dirke sells it for $44." I point out. I am thinking "This is stupid, I was just over at Dirke."
"I have to make a profit." the owner points out.
"I can get it for $70 at an appliance store." I say.
"Ok." and he walks away. I am thinking, man he won't even come down to $70. Then maybe because it is Christmas time, or maybe he reliazed just how silly this whole ordeal was, but he turns around and says, "I tell you what. Try APEED." and he tells the clerk to call to be sure that APEED will sell to me. The clerk calls.
"He'll charge you $65." the clerk tells me. The owner gives me a map and I drive over.
At APEED, I get the part and tell the guy that EBBY wanted $160.
"HA! That's the best joke I have heard today." he says.
"I said HA! too," I tell the guy. He points the part and says, "I get them from EBBY."
In the end, I realized that the furnace parts are marked up about 4000% from manufacture to the end customer. I knew there was a mark up but that is a MARK UP.
